CUIS Introduction
[CUIS AIMS & OBJECTIVES]
The Cardiff University Islamic Society (CUIS) is an
organisational body conceived, and managed, by students to facilitate
understanding on and around campus about the religion of Islam as a
comprehensive way of life, providing authoritative information, references and
reflection on Islam, Muslims and the Muslim World, and attempting to dispel the
myths and misconceptions surrounding recent world events. In addition, we also
provide support programs and activities to assist the Muslim student in the
practice of his/her faith and an opportunity to socialise with peers in an
otherwise intimidating new environment. CUIS and its events are open to all,
regardless of race, gender or creed. In all our decisions, we strive to follow
the revelation of the Qur’an and the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad
We co-ordinate various activities including weekly religious
and Da'wah (outreach) circles, lectures, dinners, sporting programmes as well as
specialised activities during the holy month of Ramadan and other special
occasions. Islam Awareness week is the highlight of the academic year
comprising an assortment of events and exhibits to allow a greater understanding
of the faith primarily amongst the general public as well as Muslims.
Membership to CUIS is open to all students, regardless of
religion, race, creed, colour, or gender. CUIS is chartered through the
Cardiff University Students Union and is an affiliate of the Federation of
Student Islamic Societies in the UK and Ireland
(FOSIS). FOSIS
is the premier
Muslim Student representative body. It was established in 1962 after a meeting
held in Birmingham by students from the cities of Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool,
London, Wolverhampton and Dublin who realised the need to co-ordinate the work
of Islamic societies across the UK and Ireland. For more information,
visit their website: http://www.fosis.org.uk/
We do not profess to be a scholarly group, rather a
non-confrontational body to serve administrative matters concerning Muslims
attending Cardiff University. We are an independent body and whilst we
collaborate with the wider Muslim community, incorporating local mosques,
schools, colleges and youth groups, we are not manipulated by any political
groups and steer clear of pursuing a sectarian agenda. We respect the
right of difference of opinion both amongst Muslims and between Muslims and
other faiths.
